History

In 2005, Pastor Olus R. Holder, Jr., MDiv., joined God in His work and planted the Fellowship of Great Expectations Christian Church. After a year of services conducted in Pastor Holder’s home and other locations, Great Expectations Church began services at Lula Belle Goodman Elementary School in Fresno, Texas. The church adopted (2) slogans: One Body, Many People, Same Purpose and Building Healthy Families, One Family at a Time. From 2006 through 2009, Great Expectations Church sought to create an impact in Southeast Fort Bend County (Fresno, Arcola, Missouri City) community through our partnerships with Lula Belle Goodman Elementary School, Hightower High School Football Team, Fort Bend Independent School District Adopt-A Family, Second Mile Mission Center, Sugar Creek Baptist Church and Fallbrook Church.

In January 2009, Talulah Ruger, Associate Minister and one of the four organizing members of Great Expectations Church, shared her vision for a faith based ministry that would focus on empowering the family to live healthier. The vision has become a reality and Talulah is the Executive Director of the non- profit ministry, Great Expectations TEEAM: Teaching, Equipping, Encouraging and Assisting Ministry to Families. This ministry was birthed to continue the work of the Fellowship of Great Expectations Christian Church and Pastor Olus R. Holder, Jr., MDiv., in connecting faith to the community. We Expect Something Great!

In October, 1980, Talulah Ruger drove 1300 miles in her ten year old, two door Toyota Corolla from Georgia to Houston, Texas. She drove with her six month old daughter, seven year old son and her mother who made the trip with her to care for the children. Talulah drove the distance, leaving everything of material worth behind except the clothing she was able to pack in the trunk of her car. She drove because giving up was not an option; and she believed that God had a better life for her and her children. After almost eight years of marriage she found herself single again, with one income and two small children. Her ideal of a family with the mother, father and children had changed, but nevertheless, she still wanted her children to know that although they lived in a single parent household, they were still very much a family. She recalls times when she felt depressed, hurt, tired frustrated and alone; but she never doubted God’s love for her and that God would bring her through some of the most difficult challenges in her life.

Now 28 years later, she understands that as her faith was tested, her endurance, perseverance, character and wisdom grew. As she looks back on her life and all that she and her children have accomplished in the midst of the many challenges, she attributes her successes and triumphs to God. She believes that He worked through the spiritual and family foundation that her parents provided for her as a child and young adult. God also used family members, friends and the kind and loving people that He navigated into her life when she needed them most.

We are living in a time when the family is deteriorating from the inside out. Talulah desires to share the love of Christ that was shown to her through Great Expectations TEEAM. She has a vision to empower families to live healthier lives spiritually, socially and physically. Each dimension will have education as a common thread. Connecting faith to the community to empower the family is vital to accomplishing the mission of GETEEAM. This will be done through collaboration with churches, community and business leaders and the people of the community.
